Ask Denise: Changing My Brokerage

Denise Lones

Q:  This fall I’m thinking about really changing my business up so that I can start the new year in a better position. I think part of that should be changing my brokerage. What kind of things should I be looking for in a new office?

A:  What a great question … but I have one for you in return. Why do you think the brokerage needs to change? I’m reminded of the saying about “throwing the baby out with the bathwater”. If your business needs revitalization, that may not necessarily mean you have to change offices. But if you do, here are the things I would be thinking about: education (what is offered, and what is the value placed on it), selling brokers (will your manager be competing with you for listings and buyers), referrals (are they available, how are they handled), culture (what is the “vibe” or feeling in the office – what is valued), market share (is their market share reasonable), and technology (what tools are available, and what training is provided). There are many more things to think about, of course, but this should provide a starting point. Good luck with your decision!
