Ask Denise: Closing Gifts

Denise Lones

Q:  Denise, I am struggling with whether to include a closing gift for my clients or not. What do you think?

A:  While I don’t think a closing can buy your way into people forgiving you for mistakes during the transaction or a lack of client care, a closing gesture can indeed go a long way in letting your clients know you are thinking of them. Closing gifts don’t have to be expensive or elaborate.

In fact, as an agent, my go-to closing gift was simply pizza and pop. I would find out when my buyers or sellers were moving and then make sure I had pizza and pop delivered to new house at about 5:30 (if that matched the moving schedule) as that was when people would really be getting hungry and trying to figure out how to eat dinner when the plates and utensils had been packed up. People loved it and raved about it.

I also think a handwritten thank you note can go a long way. Simply state the highlights of working with them and how much you appreciate their business.
