Be Still. Be Grateful.

With the holiday season upon us, many agents find themselves racing around madly, trying to tie up loose ends before the big day – whether that’s Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or something else entirely.

It’s the time of year where we wind down briefly … before winding up for the new year.

If (like me) you celebrate Christmas, you can’t wait for December 25th.  There’s a magic in the air that I don’t feel at other times of the year.

Yet in spite of all the frenzy, and all the hustle and bustle, on the morning of Christmas there’s a stillness, a sense of calm that you may feel – even if you have a house packed with friends and family.  It’s the peace that comes with knowing that you are completely, truly “off” for the day.

For many real estate agents, Christmas is the only day of the year when you know clients won’t call you.  It’s a day of sanctuary, a day of refuge, a day of peace … and a day to recharge.

This Christmas, pay close attention to the physical feeling you experience that day.  Enjoy your holiday meal and libations.  Laugh and linger with friends and family.  Acknowledge what it feels like to be at rest, and in the moment.

Take time to look back and reflect, and to articulate your gratitude at having made it through a tough year.  We’ve all had to sharpen our skills.  We’ve become better marketers (we had to, or we wouldn’t sell homes), better at conflict (we had to, or transactions would never come together), and better financial managers (even though we’re working with less money).  We’re more appreciative of the clients we do have, and infinitely more thankful for the commission checks we receive.

I hope you’ll take a moment for yourself during this holiday season on Christmas – or on whatever day you celebrate – to see how it feels to be present, be still, and be off work for the day.

Notice how you feel.

What will you do differently in 2012 to recapture this feeling … and to ensure you have the time for yourself that you deserve?

I wish for you this holiday season the opportunity to be still, be grateful, and be happy.

Very thoughtful and timely post. I hope that this weekend I can put my cell phone down and enjoy the time with my beautiful family because as we all know, it goes by too fast. Merry Christmas!

You so struck a chord, Denise, with your comment “it’s the peace of knowing that you are truly completely “off” for the day…” I am indeed going to create more of those days for myself in 2012 – thank-you for your sentiments and Merry Christmas to you and your family!
