Ask Denise: Advice on Fonts

Q: Denise, I liked your article on typography. I chose a new font, but when I showed it to a colleague in the office they said it was “too feminine”. Is there such a thing? I thought I was supposed to create my own “look” in this business!

A: I would never want to say something is “too” masculine or feminine. But it is true that some “feminine” fonts (which tend to be flow-y and script-y) can become difficult to read. That may be fine in the context of a logo or name treatment, but when it comes to fonts for the body of a printed piece it’s best to stick with something that is less elaborate – and easier to read!
