Ask Denise: Political Discussions with Clients

Denise Lones

Q:  Denise, with the government shutdown, I have clients on both sides of the political fence getting very irate regarding the state of affairs. I am trying to maintain a professional outlook and am not comfortable getting into a heated discussion. How do I respectfully bow out of the political debate without making my clients feel like I am not listening to them?

A:  This is a very timely issue and I respect your wanting to keep a professional demeanor. I agree that when professionals engage in political banter it can sometimes come back to bite them. So the next time that conversation comes up and your buyer or seller starts in with contentious political talk the most important thing you need to do is let them know that the information  you are giving them is not politically driven, it simply the facts in how this issue is affecting them personally or their transaction and is all based on the facts at hand for that moment in time.
