Ask Denise: Taking Sundays Off

Q: “Denise, I am going to make a bold move and take Sundays off. I know that you did that too when you sold real estate. I am concerned about making Sunday a ‘no client’ day. Will that cut me off for potential business? How do I handle not responding to calls and emails? I am just wondering how best to set this up.”

A: Your best bet is to set your clients up with the expectation that you are not working on Sundays. This is addressed in an initial meeting (don’t make a huge deal about it, but let them know what to expect and what will happen if something comes up on a Sunday). Then reiterate that by leaving a custom message on your voicemail on Sunday morning. Something like this, “Hello. Today is Sunday, February 12th. I am not available today and will be returning all calls first thing Monday morning.” Also set up an autoresponder on your email.

With these three actions, you should be able to take care of your clients by outlining the expectation. Will you possible lose a potential client who calls and expects you to drop everything to show a house on a Sunday? Perhaps. But do you really want a client who believes you offer an on-demand service? This doesn’t sound like a way to set up long-term success for you anyway. Let it go.
