Q: “Denise, I have a weird situation. I was showing a couple properties last week. We had been out for a while and we were getting a little hungry. I always carry granola bars with me and offered these to tide us over until the break when we were going to eat. The wife was grateful but the husband was irritated that I didn’t have nuts or a protein bar. That really took me aback! I try to be proactive and take care of my buyers, so this really surprised me. Should I have a variety? If so, what should I have? Or was this guy just out of line and I shouldn’t worry about it?”
A: I have two thoughts – first, yes, I think he was out of line. One should always be grateful when offered food. You didn’t do anything wrong. Second, if you want to take your snack offerings to the next level, I encourage you to incorporate five different types of snacks:
- Carbs – granola bars, breakfast cookies, pretzels, graham crackers
- Protein – protein bars, nuts, cheese
- Salty – chips or popcorn
- Sweet – cookies, candy
- Fruit – apples, bananas, oranges
Different people snack and eat in different ways and have different go-to items to get their blood sugar back up.
I do encourage you to have a little cooler or way to keep the fruit and snacks cool and use prepackaged items to account for potential allergens.
